Faith Daniel is a forty-six-year-old Chinese female resident of Montgomery, Texas. Faith was born in the Philippines. However, she is profoundly influenced by her Chinese ancestry. Faith has three sisters. Faith has a teaching degree and has taught in the private school sector. She can speak English, Mandarin, French, and knows sign language. Her ancestors moved from China to the Philippines due to a World War. Male children are valued more in the Chinese culture than females because males carry on the family name. Therefore, when Faith s mother was pregnant with her fourth female child she was offered to trade her child with a cousin s male child. Faith s parents refused to give up their daughter. The refusal to trade for a male baby was a significant disgrace for the family. Consequently, her father moved his family to the United States of America where her mother instilled the importance of education in each of her daughters. She considers her father s decision to move the family to the United States of America as a significant event that shaped her life. She feels that she and her sisters are much more educated than cousins that eventually moved to the country later in their lives. Faith possesses a fascinating set of life experiences along with an intriguing Chinese culture that has influenced her character.
